Sharp Island Saturday!

We finally set foot on one of Hong Kong’s finest beaches – Hap Mun Bay (Half Moon Bay) in Sharp Island. I cannot believe we waited for years before seeing this place.

The view that greeted us when we docked at Hap Mun Bay Pier.

It is relatively easy to get to this beach from Sai Kung Pier — the tough part is getting to Sai Kung! In 15 minutes aboard a sampan, we reached our destination.

The sampan roundtrip fare was 40HKD per person. We were told the boat comes every 30mins and reminded that the last boat from Hap Mun Bay pier was at 6pm.

We were supposed to do a 3km hike to this beach from Sharp Island Pier. But when we realized our boat was not stopping at that pier, we accepted our fate and embraced more time on the fine white sand beach and crystal clear waters.

Lukey surveying the area

We rented an umbrella for shade and some floaters for the kids and voila – we were set for the day.

Other than playing on the sand and the beach waters, we also got a good dose of snorkeling done. The rocky areas on both sides of Hap Mun Bay beach have some interesting fishes.

Both rocky sides of this beach are snorkeling spots.

I ventured a bit on the other side of Hap Mun Bay close to the pier and had some interesiting sightings. There were loads of teeny tiny schools of fish but my favorite two finds today were one, the massive orange-yellow nudy branch just by the pier waters and two, the 1.5 foot long silver fish with two black dots on its tail area just chilling at the shallow part of the beach. The former is so far the biggest nudy branch I’ve seen and the latter the biggest fish I’ve seen in Hong Kong waters. Too bad I do not have an underwater camera. You just have to trust my words on it.

We took the 5pm sampan back to Sai Kung Pier. But before we finished our day trip, we capped it off with a visit to our dear friend Karo’s place.

Until the next time!!!

Karo also welcomed us to Sai Kung today. After giving her about an hour notice, she booked us a table for brunch and then hosted dinner for us to cap off our visit to her hood! Aren’t we lucky?!

So lucky to have this lovely woman as a friend!

We have not really explored Sharp Island as planned, so I’m pretty sure we will be back again soon…
