Tiger’s Head trail: Discovering Discovery Bay

There are days when I still could not believe I’m hiking, much less write about a hike that I and my family just accomplished because I — the hike hater — forced them out of the house to hike. But guess you can blame it on the pandemic for making me a hiker. So thanks COVID?! As they say, when life throws you lemons…

So we made the most out of our beautiful Sunday and hiked up Tiger’s Head Trail in Discovery Bay. I found this trail (aka Lo Fu Tao) in All Trails app, and figured it could be something close by we could go to for an afternoon hike.

It looked like an easy hike kicking off at the back of Greenbelt Court buildings in Discovery Bay and ending closeby to the ferry station of the island. But what we didn’t anticipate was the steep hike up with loads of rocks and roots to get you on top. It shouldn’t be a problem for adult hikers, but for our tiny humans, the trail was quite a hard one.

After about 500m on the trail, we finally got on a normal hiking path.

Up where they walk…

While walking up, the kids were fixated on the idea of sitting down the massive rock that is Lau Fa Tung. I thought this was actually the peak of our hike, but we quickly found out we still have 2/3 of the trail to do.

Trying out sitting on some smaller rock to make their way up on the Tiger’s Head
We thought this was the peak, but no, this was just 1/3 of our journey!

When we finally got to the massive rock, Aaron was hesitant making the kids sit on top. I assured him the kids are safe with me but he was still very nervous so after snapping a photo, they had to get off immediately!

On top of the massive rock (which now I know isn’t the Tiger’s Head, or is it?! Lol). Aaron was so scared of letting the kids sit on the rock so he just snapped this photo and took the kids off the rock. Meanwhile, I stayed and took some selfies!
On top of Lau Fa Tung (would be great to know the translation of Lau Fa Tung! I know it’s not Tiger’s head, maybe baby tiger’s head?)

We settled them on a smaller rock and had a snack break! It was on this rock that we realized we’re not even 1/3 done on the hike so we soldiered on.

Aaron was happier with the kids on this rock instead. Lau Fa Tung on the background looked indeed suicidal. We now know who is the responsible parent.

And when we finally got on the Tiger’s Head, we didn’t even stay long. We just allowed the kids to take a quick sit on the rock, then we immediately headed down the path to make sure we got to the end of the trail before dark.

The kids wanting to sit on every rock they see. But to be fair, I also wanted to take a break!
Seeing our final destination, but it was not that close!

After a few meters, the slope became steep again with very slippery path. It was honestly scary as I myself was slipping and I was worried of the kids tumbling down and hurting themselves.

Aya doing a slow but sure hike down!

But thank goodness, we all managed to get down ok. The path we took gave us a quick view of the rest of Discovery Bay area that we are not aware of. So I guess we can say we discovered something new in Discovery Bay!

The DB we normally know
Still part of DB. Fancy looking residential area close to the reservoir!
Almost there!!!
Very interesting path. We had to get through this overgrown bushes to find the road that is the end of the trail!
